Education

The education system in the Kootenay/Boundary consists of "public schools" that are funded by the taxpayer and private schools that are paid for by the parent of the child. Education is compulsory for children between the ages of 6 and 15 in Canada. Children usually start elementary (primary) school at the age of 5, then enter high school at age 13 or 14. Children in the region receive public education free of charge.

After students complete their elementary education, it is expected that they continue with post- secondary education at a college or continue their studies at university in their field of choice.

Canadian universities are internationally recognized, can be public or private, and offer 3- to 4-year Bachelor's degrees as well as Masters, Doctoral and Post-Doctoral degrees.

How it Works

Parents must register their children to attend public school. Enrollment can be done at your local school or at the school board office.
