SIN Number

A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is one of the first things you should apply for when you arrive, as no one can legally work in Canada without one. It is a unique number that a person is assigned that enables him or her to work for any employer in Canada, to arrange banking services, pay income tax and receive employee benefits and services.

How it Works

In the Kootenay/Boundary centres, there are two Service Canada locations where you can apply, one in Nelson and one in Trail. This is also where you can get your Driver licence if you want to do both at the same time; however there is a private automobile insurance agency that you are able to apply for your driver licence at in Grand Forks and Castlegar.

To apply for your SIN card you must go in person with your identifications. There are no forms to fill out; officers will do it for you, so you must bring your ID documents where they will be copied, verified, and returned immediately to you.  A card number is given effective immediately and a SIN card is mailed within 10 days. There is no fee for this.

Service Canada

The service Canada agent suggests that newcomers call with their specific situations and they can be given procedures or a referral as the immigration identification is so variable. 1800 622-6232 (1 800 O Canada)

Newcomers may access a SIN card, Employment Insurance programs, Canada Pension Plans, Old Age Security and on site computers and printers for government forms and services.
